CHARACTER NAME: Kim Yoo/Ken Young
CHARACTER AGE: 23
SPECIES: Siren
BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Kim’s family was originally from South Korea, although he and his brother emigrated to the US when Kim was still very young after his parent’s died. Too young to really remember them Kim had to rely on his older brother’s stories of his parents. His older brother was reluctant to talk about what happened to his parents and not being much older than Kim he didn’t really remember a lot about them either.
After the death of his parents Kim and his brother moved to Siren Cove to live with his Great Aunt Seohyun. Considerably older than both boys she took them in all the same, caring for them with as much love as any parent. She paid particular attention to Kim’s brother, although Kim soon learned that was likely because his brother didn’t hesitate to use his siren abilities on people, charming and influencing them. Seohyun was a half-siren and while not easily controlled, the older Yoo was not above influencing her in small ways.
In school Kim quickly took a fast interest in all things musical. Singing, instruments, and even dancing seemed to come easily to both he and his brother. His brother was a star in high school theatre group and Kim followed in his footsteps, as much an attempt to win approval from his Great Aunt as it was for his love of music and acting.
After his brother moved to New York to pursue a career on Broadway (with some relative success) Kim became a standout on the stage as well. Once he graduated from high school he earned a spot studying at Juilliard, determined to impress the world with what he could do.
During his second year of schooling Kim dropped out despite excelling at Juillard. He had joined a band made up of other members of the school to mess around with and before too long the other members wanted to drop out and perform as the band full time. Desperate to be part of a circle of friends Kim dropped out as well and formed Phoenix Falling with the other members.
Propelled by their talent, hard work and Kim’s talent at writing music as well as his undeniable stage presence the band quickly became popular in New York. After someone from a music label attended one of their shows they were quickly signed to the label. Almost immediately they were put through the hype machine, quickly going from opening act to headliner. Kim, whose name was determined to be “too ethnic” was told to go by Ken Young, which he agreed to do with great reluctance, afraid of ruining the band’s chances if he didn’t agree to the change.
While certainly over-exposed in many ways the fact that the band had multiple hit singles on their first record and had genuine musical talent and complexity in their songs they were saved from the fate of being too loathed for their explosion in popularity. A worldwide tour, television show cameos, ridiculous posters, and awards shows of all kinds quickly follow.
Kim, however, felt miserable. Despite his stage persona he was deeply unhappy playing the extroverted front man for the band. While he loved the music it became more and more of a struggle for him to keep up with it all. After the recording of their second album Kim quit the band, a mere two years after he left Juilliard to follow “his dream”. Feeling like a failure, Kim returned to Siren Cove, where hopefully no one knew him and would remind him of what he had walked away from.
PERSONALITY: Kim is an introvert, shy and preferring to keep to himself. He’d rather stay at home and practice an instrument than hang out at a party. Music doesn’t seem like work to him, it’s how he relaxes and recharges and lets his emotions out. To him it almost comes as natural as breathing, one of those people who can pick up an instrument and fool around with it and in a short amount of time have a decent amount of skill at it.
Despite being an introvert, Kim loves to perform for an audience. It doesn’t feel like work to him or the same as talking to someone. It’s a rush to him, the sort of thing that can leave him energizes and exhausted all at once from everything he puts into it and gets back.
Kim is a siren but isn’t comfortable with the fact. His Great Aunt is a little bit loopy and he blames it on the fact that his brother used his abilities on her so often. Whether there’s any basis for that or not, it doesn’t matter. Kim has absolutely no desire to influence people with his abilities. He has a hard enough time accepting any positive opinions of himself as it is, he doesn’t need to add a complex of worrying whether or not their affection is genuine because he charmed them with his abilities once. He has even gone so far as to have spells tattooed onto his body, hidden in full sleeves in both arms, that prevent him from actively using his abilities. While the tattoos fade over time and need to be renewed periodically, he considers it worth the price.
Kim has no real ambitions of his own other than to do something with performing. Previously he had joined the drama department to follow in his brother’s footsteps and then attended Juilliard to impress his Great Aunt. When he dropped out he was following the dreams of his bandmates. Right now Kim seems to be stuck in a pattern of learning a lot about what he doesn’t want to do.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Kim doesn’t like it. Mostly he’s worried about it spilling over into the greater magical community and sirens being targeted as evil creatures.
LIFESTYLE: Kim grew up lower-middle class, his Great Aunt always living well within her means. Any surplus always seemed to be spent on something nice for his brother. Since joining the band Kim has saved a decent amount of money, especially since he wrote most of the band’s songs by himself, getting a lion’s share of the royalties. The extensive touring right out of the gate also helped him stock away a nice nest egg. Living back at home with his Great Aunt, Kim’s expenses are minimal.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Kim is a siren and has all the usual siren abilities; scaled form, ability to persuade people, lovely singing voice, etc. He refuses to use these abilities though, instead wanting to get through life “on his own merits”. If he were to use them he’d likely have to have some sort of training since he has very little experience with them.
